Free Myself expands on the colorful eclecticism that’s always permeated Sophie’s music, encompassing everything from folk to soul to Brill Building pop. In many ways a meditation on undoing false self-beliefs and accessing your truest nature, the album’s title track “Free Myself” is gloriously yearning and speaks to the profound joy of self-liberation. Meanwhile, on the moody yet soaring “Better Off Without You,” she explores the pain of betrayal and the transformative triumph of reclaiming your power. While Hawkins wrote most of the album on her own, the quietly enchanting, acoustic-guitar-laced “Green Eyes” arose from an informal session with UK-born songwriter Will Knox, and on “You Are My Balloon,” the artist closes out the album with a gorgeously expressed outpouring of love for her daughter, both breathtakingly delicate and charged with untempered emotion. Co-produced alongside engineer Ken Rich (Ani DiFranco, Ingrid Michaelson) and featuring musicians like pianist/string arranger Andrew Sherman, the album is a medley of grit and grace, much like the human experience, something Sophie uniquely and authentically communicates throughout Free Myself.
Born out of a tumultuous period that Sophie refers to as her “personal tsunami,” including splitting with her longtime partner and returning to New York after living in Venice, California for 17 years, the album sees the artist both reflecting on her revolutionary career and embarking on a new creative chapter of independence and positivity. Free Myself is a testament to the everlasting talent of Sophie B. Hawkins – over three decades after her debut she’s still evolving her sound and making honest tracks that stick with the audience beyond first listen. A dynamic creative force, Sophie has always been fully involved in every aspect of the production of her records, from background vocals and playing her own instruments as a multi-instrumentalist, to engineering and production of her albums. She has proven to be an enduring artist with a fierce commitment to artistic integrity while both constantly evolving and remaining steadfastly true to her own authentic history and experience which connects her to her fans at the very deepest levels.
Sophie’s indelible hit songs such as “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” and “As I Lay Me Down” have been featured in cultural touchstone TV shows and films (from recent hits Stranger Things, Euphoria, Ozark, and PEN15, to landmark series Beverly Hills, 90210, Dawson’s Creek, The L Word and more) and the artist has always been ahead of her time with her steadfast activism supporting such causes as environmental protection, animal rights and LGBTQ equality; using her songwriting and platform for positive change with the forward-thinking, pioneering outlook she has championed all along. Her ever-evolving career has also included releasing six widely beloved albums, breaking chart records with her smash hits, four worldwide singles from Whaler and a starring role as Janis Joplin in the critically acclaimed musical Room105.
